Presentation of 2004 Scholarships at Cedar Knoll Inn Restaurant
May 19, 2004

The original farmhouse that is Cedar Knoll Inn today was constructed in the late 1800's as a tenant farm house for the 115 acre plantation named "Marshland on the Potomac".   Today, the dining experience at Cedar Knoll Inn is a perfect mix of history, romace and peacefulness.   We also enjoyed the tranquil view of the Potomac River during the social hour.   You can see some of the original log construction in some of the pictures.

The theme for this year's award ceremony turned out to be "Spirit."   One of the scholarship awardees said "the clinching factor for him in deciding to attend the U of I was all of the orange and the school spirit he saw displayed at a basketball game he attended."   I wonder if he was impressed when the alums attending this reception suddenly stood up and sang "Hail to the Orange?"   The certificates provided by Sue Pruitt (Alumni Association) were in a very bright and eye catching orange and blue.   The room in the historic building which houses the Cedar Knoll Inn Restaurant had U of I banners hung from the rafters with care, the tables were decorated in orange and blue, and student packages included a couple of U of I decals.

The value of each scholarship this year was worth $1350 which is up from $1200.   Special thanks go to every club member for contributing through their membership fees and other donations.

Sunday, May 2, 2004 in Mount Vernon, VA
The University of Illinois Alumni Club of Greater Washington DC area held its annual meeting and awards luncheon at Mount Vernon Inn on the estate of George Washington.

Jan Mulvaney, who recently completed seven years on the Board of Directors of the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras, arranged for a five-piece string ensemble to accompany the social hour playing classical music.   The ensemble ended with a lively rendition of "We're Loyal to You, Illinois" and "Hail to the Orange."   The audience joined in by singing along.

Owen Lee, the club president, started the meeting by introducing all 49 special guests.   Three distinguished guests from Champaign, Tony Tangora, assistant director for club program from the Alumni Association, Dean Robert Easter from the college of ACES, and David Bruns, assistant director for development from the college of LAS were introduced.   Three of the past "Alumni of Year" awardees, Robert Doubek, Ambassador John McDonald, and Joe Urschel were in attendance.   Then the waiters dressed in their colonial garb served our filet mingon, chicken, or salmon lunches.

The award ceremony began with Owen announcing that every member of our club were award winners.   The Alumni Association honored our club with an "Outstanding Club Award" at the Leadership Conference last fall.   We won because of everyones outstanding support of club activities.   In the last two years, total attendance at the over 150 events was over 2500 alums with families and friends.   Generous donations have allowed the club to award 18 scholarships in the 2 years.   Appreciation awards were presented to the following board members:
Phyllis Gron, Director of the Scholarship Program, sent applications to over 200 (179 UIUC and 28 UIC) students.   Phyllis Bruns, Newsletter Editor, was recognized for her new ideas for newsletter articles.   Danielle Buente, Coordinator for Sport Viewings, was recognized for hosting 20 viewing parties most notable was the Duke game that was nationally televised and started at 10 PM while she was on spring break in St. Louis - 31 attended.   Ed Kim was recognized for leading a financial audit.   Jennifer Gore, Director for Recruiting, assisted Tammie Bouseman from the office of admissions with numerous college fairs, a prospective student reception, and an admitted student reception.   Merle Mulvaney (not pictured because he was the photographer) was recognized for constantly helping the president with all phases of club activities.

Owen introduced Robert Easter, Dean of the College of Agriculture, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences, who talked about the College of ACES and introduced our "Alumni of Year" honoree, Dr. John Dobrinsky.   Dean Easter was one of John's first professors and advisors when John was at Illinois earning his Masters Degree.   Dobrinsky’s breakthrough research investigating embryonic development and germplasm conservation in livestock led to his developing the technology for the indefinite preservation of gametes and embryos that can be used to preserve valuable genetics of animals.   This technology enables the regeneration and subsequent re-population of valuable genetics while ensuring against devastating loss or possible extinction.   The payoff comes in situations like the recent Hoof and Mouth Disease outbreak in Europe and the BSE (Mad cow) outbreaks in North America, where entire herds and breeds of cattle and swine were or could be exterminated.

A short business meeting followed these ceremonies.   Last years minutes were presented for review, after a short time, a motion was made by Merle Mulvaney to approve them.   It was seconded by Basil Tripsas, and passed unanamously by voice vote.   A copy of the club's by-laws were presented with a proposed new section which would require a financial audit every two years.   After a short review period, a motion was made by John Dobrinsky and seconded by Paul Sisco to accept the change.   It passed by unanamous voice vote.   A slate of officers proposed by the board were presented - Mary Ellen Elliott for president, Tony Wang for vice-president, Lynda McCann-Gillman for secretary, and Ed Kim for treasurer.   Owen asked for nominations from the floor, and hearing none, asked for a motion to accept the slate.   Basil Tripsas made the motion and it was seconded by Pete Sheridan.   It passed by unanimous voice vote.   The new president took over, presented Owen with a watch, a pen, and a license plate holder.   She adjourned the meeting at about 3:30 PM.   We proceeded on to the mansion grounds for several photo ops!
Several Local College Fairs
Many Washington DC Alumni have assisted the Office of Admissions by volunteering to represent Illinois in several local spring college fairs. Ben Wang, Mary Schackelford, Gracelia Mata, and Jeff Flank attended the Catholic College Fair on March 29th; Jennifer Gore, along with Tammie Bouseman from the Office of Admissions, attended the Montgomery County College Fair on April 20th and 21st; and Danielle Buente and Jennifer Gore attended the Independent Schools College Fair on April 28th. We hope that the volunteers from our Alumni Club have helped U of I by recruiting more outstanding students from the Washington DC area.
Kicks Against Breast Cancer Soccer Tournament   April 4, 2004
On a cold and windy Maryland morning, soccer was being played on many fields at the soccerplex in Germantown, MD.   It was time for the annual "Kicks Against Breast Cancer Soccer Tournamnet", and the most important goal this day was to raise money to benefit the Claudia Mayer Cancer Resource and Image Center and the Claudia Mayer Breast Cancer Foundation.   The Illinois women's soccer team raised over $3000, and also played great soccer!   Our team played the University of Maryland to a draw (0-0) in the morning, and in the afternoon, the Illini defeated the University of Virginia (3-2).   In the picture below, our Alumni Club's two 2002 scholarship winners, Paula and Laura, can be seen playing in the game against UVA.   Laura is number 7, and Paula is number 18 in the orange jerseys.
Reading Scholarship Applications and Deciding on Recipients
On Saturday April 3rd, Phyllis Gron, our director of scholarships, along with five other alums (Tom, Tony, Basil, Linda, and Jennifer) met at the Gron home to read the 30 or so scholarship applications we received.   We sent out about 207 applications to 179 UIUC and 28 UIC accepted students.

December 13, 2003

Attendees:
Lynda Gillman, John Ellison, Phyllis Gron, John Dobrinsky, Jan Mulvaney, Linda Moll, Merle Mulvaney, Danielle Buente, Jennifer Gore, and not pictured Owen Lee (photographer).

The meeting was postponed a week because of snow and icy conditions on the 6th of Dec, but now was called to order at 10:10 AM by Owen Lee.

President’s Announcements (Owen Lee)
Leadership Conference: We won the outstanding club award. The clubs from all over the world are pooling some scholarship funds and will award two scholarships next year in honor of Julie Frictl.

Baltimore Sports Viewing Parties: Sport parties are going to be set up at a pub near Baltimore for the convenience of our alumnus that live closer to Baltimore than Crystal City.

Treasurer’s Report (John Ellison)
John presented the financial reports.   John reported that our members were very generous with scholarship donations - THANKS to each member.   John also reported that membership was higher than usual at this point of year.   The reports were unanamously accepted.

Secretary’s Report Minutes for the September meeting were accepted by unanamous vote.

Directory: (Cathy Bischoff)
Cathy called me before the meeting and I passed her report on the board.   Sponsor support is now $700.   I reported that I found a service that would duplicate the booklet for about $2.25 per copy.   Burt Wagner reported by email that he had the data base up-to-date.

Sport Viewing Parties: (Danielle Buente)
Danielle reported that because of the record she suspended football game viewing parties.   Several very successful men's basketball viewings have already been held.

Recruitment: (Jennifer Gore)
Jennifer reported on the MD student interviews during September, and the VA student interviews during October.   The prospective student reception at the Marriott in Gaithersburg, MD was well attended by club members on Nov. 23rd.

Scholarships: (Phyllis Gron)
Phyllis gave us her recommendation on how many scholarships we should award this year, and how much should be awarded for each scholarship.   We decided by unnanamous vote to award UP TO 8 scholarships in the amount of $1350.   Security concerns at Fort Meyer generated a good discussion on the pros and cons of holding the scholarship reception at another location.   A motion was unanamously passed to search for a new location.
Danielle volunteered to help send out thank you/invitations for the reception.

Alumni of the Year: (Merle Mulvaney)
Since John Dobrinsky was one of the candidates for alumni of the year, he excused himself and went home.   Merle led the discussion, and pointed out that his committee was recommending 3 excellent candidates from which the board could choose.   It was noted that several alums had submitted applications which were added to the pool of eligable candidates.   The field of candidates was especially strong this year.   John Dobrinsky, an exceptional scientist, was selected as "Illini of the Year".

Meeting adjourned at 12:20pm.

Lunch and Illinois vs. Temple Basketball Game   November 29, 2003
Three U of I alumni clubs joined together to root on the FIGHTING ILLINI at the Palestra on the U of Penn campus in Philadelphia, PA.   Several alums came down from New York as 36 DC alums drove to Philly to join a few alums from the Philly area.   We met at the New Deck Tavern for lunch and a "pep" rally before the game.
Once we arrived at the Palestra, we found our block of 75 seats behind the Illinois bench.

The Illini played a great game.   Williams started off hot hitting 3 three's early, and the Illini built a double digit lead.   On several occasions Temple cut into the lead, but the Illini would hit a few baskets to pull away again.
Prospective Student Reception at Marriott in Gaithersburg, MD
On November 23rd, Jennifer Gore (left), our Club's Director of Recruiting, and Phyllis Bruns, Newsletter Editor, greet and register prospective students.
Tammie Bouseman (standing at extreme left) from the U of I Office of Admissions in Champaign and 7 current students (standing in front) answer questions about life on campus from many prospective students and their parents.   Three of the current students were club scholarship recipients.
THE 2003 FLAG FOOTBALL SEASON:
Our club participated in the Capital Alumni Network Flag Football League again this year.   The games are played on the Mall in Washington, DC on Saturday and Sunday during October, November, and December.   Again this year, thanks to Patrick Godfrey we have a team picture, and Pat we wish you well in California with your Air Force career.

  The October 23-26, 2003 Conference
The conference had 47 participants attending from 27 clubs, and was an international event with one attendee from Japan.   This conference had more events than any I have attended so far.   The first event was a delicious dinner at Biaggi's Ristorante Italiano on Thursday evening.   The social hour before dinner was a great opportunity to get acquainted with the other leaders.

Friday morning started with another social session while enjoying a continental breakfast.   A very interesting Power Point presentation was shown which highlighted club accomplishments.   Club leaders introduced themselves and gave some insight on running their club.

At noon, we enjoyed the awards luncheon and the presentation of awards.   Our club won one of the awards for outstanding large clubs.   The picture shows Barbara Hundley, the Associate Chancellor and Vice President of the University for Alumni Relations, holding the left end of the banner, Loren Taylor, President and CEO of the Alumni Association, holding the right end of the banner.   I am in the middle receiving the award on behalf of the members of our club.

Eleven clubs were presented 110% awards for specific aspects of their programs.   These winners are pictured below.

In the afternoon, the Campus Alumni Advisory Board presented the results of a recent survey.   Then four round table sessions were held.   I chose to attend the one on "Electronic Communications".   Susan and Wendy did a great job of leading the discussion.   The discussion on how to handle email addesses was very helpful.
When the "work" ended we relaxed at Legends, watched the Homecoming Parade, cheered at the Pep Rally, and saw the soccer team win a game over Northwestern to clinch second place in the Big Ten Conference.

On Saturday morning, we congregated at Denis and Denruth's motor home to tailgate before watching our football team play Minnesota.   After the game, we met at Temple Boyne Buell Hall to congratulate the students that received club scholarships.   Saturday evening, the nationally ranked volleyball team challenged Indiana at Huff Gym.   We won the match by winning 3 of the four games.

On Sunday afternoon, the soccer team won a game from Wis-Green Bay, which ended homecoming weekend for me.

The meeting was called to order at 10:10 AM by Owen Lee.   It was held at the home of Phyllis Gron.

President’s Announcements (Owen Lee)
Annual Report: It was submitted to Alumni Association about a week before the due date.   We reported 79 events for the 2002/2003 FY with over 1500 people attending.   Thanks to Lynda for an excellent job of writing it.

Leadership Conference: The conference will be held homecoming weekend (Oct. 24-26) in Champaign.   All board members were encouraged to attend.

Award luncheon: Mount Vernon Inn has been reserved for May 2, 2004.   Luncheon price will be the lowest in years - either $25 or $26 per person.

Geographic area for our Club: The last list of alumnus received from AA included Washington DC and the surrounding area within about a 25 mile radius around DC.   This did not include Annapolis and Frederick, MD or Winchester or Fredericksburg, VA.   I requested that our area be extended to a radius that would include these cities.

Baltimore Sports Viewing Parties: Sport parties are going to be set up at a pub near Baltimore for the convenience of our alumnus that live closer to Baltimore than Crystal City.

Vice-president’s Announcements (Mary Ellen Elliott)
Sunday dinners: There might be one in October.

Ski Trip: Those Illini that have attended in the past can continue, but it will no longer be offered as a future event.

Treasurer’s Report (John Ellison)
John presented the financial reports.   Merle offered a motion to approve the reports.   Jack Wagner seconded the motion.   It passed unanimously.

John presented the report that was prepared by Edwin Kim that reviewed the informal audit of the club’s financial records.   Following the presentation Basil Tripsas offered a motion to accept the report.   Merle seconded the motion.   It passed unanimously.

Timing of dues payments: A question was asked concerning at what point during the year should dues be credited as payment for the next FY?   For instance if a member paid dues in mid July (two weeks before the end of the FY), should we send that member an invoice to pay again dues just two weeks later for the upcoming FY?   Jack Wagner made a motion to designate any dues payment in the last 3 months of a FY as a dues payment for the following FY.   Rosie Johnson seconded it, and it passed unanimously.

Secretary’s Report (Minutes for the June meeting were not available)

Directory: (Cathy Bischoff)
Cathy reported that we now have 13 sponsors for a total of $375 toward the production of the directory.   She and Burt Wagner will meet tomorrow to coordinate their efforts.   Cathy will volunteer to help Burt with data entry if he needs the help.

Sport Viewing Parties: (Danielle Buente)
Danielle reported that MO football game drew 21 or so fans, and that she would probably have all of the football parties at Crystal City Sports Pub.   She has about 170 email addresses that get announcements.

Recruitment: (Jennifer Gore)
Jennifer reported that MD students would be interviewed September 20 and 21; VA students Oct. 17 and 18; that the prospective student reception would be Nov. 23rd; and the admitted student reception would be March 21st.

Scholarship (Phyllis Gron)
Phyllis showed an Illio picture of our two past scholarship winners that perform on the soccer team.   It was pointed out that the soccer team as a whole has a GPA greater than 3.1.

Discussion of new scholarships: In response to interest by the UIAA at UIC, local high school students admitted to UIC will be sent scholarship applications and will compete for one of our scholarships.   The scholarship honoring Lori Godwin will again be pursued because a new contact has been found with the Alexandria Scholarship program.   This scholarship will be for $1000, and will be cost shared equally between our club and the Alexandria Scholarship Fund.   It will be for a student attending the U of I.   A new scholarship honoring Julie Frichtl was discussed.   Julie was an employee of AA and passed away recently from cancer.   Tony Tangora, our AA rep, recently forwarded an email from our club to the other U of I clubs suggesting the clubs pool their money and give a U of I student a scholarship in Julie’s honor.   Seven clubs so far have pledged support for this scholarship.   A motion was made by Merle for our club to support this scholarship up to the amount of one of our regular scholarships or $867.   Basil seconded it, and it passed unanimously.

Newsletter: (Owen for Phyllis Bruns)
Phyllis completed the Fall newsletter on Sunday, Aug. 31.   We have 600 copies of it, and distribution has started.   Phyllis and Owen would like to find a way to eliminate writing 5 different event descriptions - one each for the newsletter, for the web, for emails, for AA Magazine, and for the AA Calendar.

Events (Owen with various event coordinators)
Owen reviewed the Crossfire event.   Merle reviewed Wolf Trap.   Owen reminded everyone of the upcoming Civil War walk (Oct 18th), and the potential New York City trip to watch the men’s basketball team play in Madison Square Garden during November.

Meeting adjourned at 12:00 noon.

12th Annual Wolf Trap Picnic & Performance of "Thoroughly Modern Millie"
Story and pictures by Merle Mulvaney
On August 26, 2003, thirty-six alumni/family/friends attended a performance of the Broadway musical "Thoroughly Modern Millie", winner of six Tony awards, including Best Musical.   All but nine of them attended the pre-performance picnic.   For the twelfth time, we escaped being "rained-out", but it was close this year!   Severe thunderstorms, and about two inches of rainfall in the hour preceding the picnic resulted in numerous power outages and road closings, thus complicating everyone's travel schedule.   By picnic-time, all the water had dissipated, the temperature had moderated, and it became a near perfect picnic setting.   We were very pleased that three of our Alumni of the Year winners (Fran and Gant Redmon, and Joe Urschel) braved the weather to join in the festivities.   Terre Jones, President and CEO of the Wolf Trap Foundation, and former director of the Krannert Art Center on campus, also stopped by the picnic and visited with the attendees.   Merle Mulvaney was presented with an award for his outstanding work on this Wolf Trap event, making magnets, coordinating Penn State bus trip, etc, etc, etc.   By curtain-time, the other nine attendees had arrived, and all 36 were in their seats when the show started!
Attendees came from MD and VA and spanned classes from 1950 to 1999, but represented only the UIUC campus.
Post-Season Softball Tournament
The Illini won their opening game 33-26 over Boston College before losing their next two games.   It was a GREAT year with lots of fun and socializing.
On July 17, 2003, we were again in the "CROSSFIRE"
When we attended Crossfire in January, we could not get a ticket for everyone that signed up.   Therefore, we attended a second Crossfire show LIVE from the Campus of George Washington University.   Each show was unique and exciting!   January's show was on the night of the State of the Union message, and we had the pleasure of watching all four hosts perform.   This show had a delayed start because Tony Blair was finishing a televised speech on Capitol Hill.   The picture below shows Abbi, the shows director, preparing the audience to vote on their keypads, to avoid the overhead camera during commercials, etc.   And on this evening, she had to really work some magic to fit a 30 minute show into about 20 minutes.   Our hosts were Robert Novak, U of I alum and 1985 club "Alumni of Year" award winner, and Paul Begala.   Crossfire's guest was Lawrence Eagleburger, Former Secretary of State.

The show was centered around the following topics:
July 17th NEWS HEADLINES:
* Another purported Saddam Hussein tape aired
* Yard dug up for Hoffa evidence produces nothing
* 'Six Feet', 'West Wing' dominate Emmy nominations

July 17th POLITICAL HEADLINES:
* Blair to discuss intelligence claims with Bush
* Gephardt, Kucinich apologize to NAACP
* Senator introduces Food Responsibility Act

In the Crossfire… British Prime Minister Tony Blair addresses a joint session of Congress today, while controversy continues to swirl around the intelligence used by the Bush administration to build the case against Saddam Hussein. Could Blair's political future be on the line? Will he continue to stand behind the claim that Iraq was trying to gain uranium from Africa? Will Bush and Blair pay a price if weapons of mass destruction are not discovered in Iraq? Are the continuing casualties in Iraq turning public opinion against the peacekeeping effort? We ask a former secretary of state for his assessment of the situation.
  THE 2003 SOFTBALL SEASON:
Congratulations to the club's co-ed softball team for a great 10-5 regular season.   The regular season started with 7 wins in a row outscoring the opponents 111-40.   Even though the team ended with a 10-5 record and in fourth place, they were only 1 game out of first.   Three teams were tied for first with 11-4 records.

The club provided some financial support for new equipment.   The team really appreciated it, and sent the club this nice thank you note.

June 14, 2003 Board Meeting
President Owen Lee updated everyone on developments since the last board meeting (annual meeting plans and how this years membership and event participation compare to previous years.

VARIOUS BOARD MEMBERS REPORTED ON ACTIVITIES IN THE THEIR AREA OF RESPONSABILITY:
Mary Ellen the next dinner group meeting, preparation of magnets and business cards, and the "Race for the Cure."    John Ellison, treasurer, reported on our financial situation.    Danielle Buente passed on comments from Jennifer Gore on recruitment activities.   Danielle also reported on our sports viewing parties, and mentioned that we would have a viewing for the Wisconsin game on Tuesday even though it was a late game.    I passed on comments from Phyllis Gron about the status of finding students worthy of receiving our 8 scholarships this year.   Phyllis mailed 138 applications to admitted students on February 19th.   The mailings were to 6 DC, 91 MD, and 41 VA students.    Basil Tripsas mentioned that The room at the officers club was reserved for the scholarship reception.    Cathy Bischoff (our newest board member) reported on what she had done so far to produce a membership directory and her plans for the future.   A couple of copies of the almost completed spring newsletter was passed around for review.   Each future event coordinator reported on status THEIR event.
WE DECIDED TO:
1) reverse our previous decision to send scholarship applications to all admitted students in the DC, MD, and VA areas to only students closeby DC.
2) send our guidelines on the scholarship program to the Chicago campus AA.

  Washington Freedom Soccer - June 8, 2003

Our tailgate party started with Lucas Tannous, a 2002 graduate from the music college, singing the National Anthem.   He stood by a United State's flag that flew over our nation's captol with the Robert Fitzgerald Kennedy Stadium in the background.   Lucas's performance was awesome!
Cindy Smith, a club board member, was honored for planning and coordinating several unique events.   These events included birdwatching, canoeing, hiking the Billy Goat Trail, and enjoying a comedy night at Wolf Trap.   Thanks Cindy for changing the pace of our events.
Janet Rayfield, U of I soccer coach, talked about the successes of our soccer team on and off the field of play.
The kids had a ball at the Discovery Kids Fan Zone - getting their faces painted and playing interactive games.   They also had fun helping me draw winners names for the 25 or so door prizes that we gave away.
After the tailgate party we watched the Freedom lose to the Boston Breakers.   At least this year Mia Hamm played in the game.   At our soccer event two years ago, she had received three red cards prior to OUR game and had to sit out.

The University of Illinois Alumni Club of Greater Washington DC area held its annual meeting and awards luncheon at Tragara Ristorante.   Owen Lee, the club president, chaired the meeting.   After all 42 special guests were introduced, we enjoyed a delicious lunch.   The award ceremony began with Owen extending his appreciation for everyones outstanding support of the club's scholarship program.   This support allowed us to win the "Best Club Scholarship Program" award that the Alumni Association gave our club at last fall's leadership conference.

Phyllis Bruns, newsletter editor, was recognized for all the work she does in "getting the news" and reporting it VERY accurately in our semi-annual newsletter.   Danielle Buente, coordinator for sport viewing parties, was recognized for selecting good games, advertising, and hosting 21 football and basketball parties.

Last fall the club had a picnic at past president TJ Atkinson's lovely country estate.   The picnic was attended by Joel Weisman, Loren Taylor, Loren's wife Susan, Loren's son, 5 of our club's past presidents, and about 50 club members.   A framed picture of this historic event was presented to past presidents Aran Hegarty and John Ellison.

Joe Urschel was presented with the "Illini of the Year" award.   Seven past recipients of the award helped us welcome Mr. Urschel into this elite group of Illinois alumni.   Pictured in the front row (left to right) Ambassador John McDonald (2001), Robert Doubek (1996), Fran Redmon (1997), and Godfrey Sperling (1986).   Standing in the back (left to right) Hal Bruno (1989), Bobby Mitchell (1987), Gant Redmon (1997), and Joe Urschel (2002).

Joe Urschel is senior vice president and executive director of the Newseum, the world’s first interactive museum of news, which is in the process of relocating to a larger facility at Pennsylvania Avenue and Sixth Street, NW, in Washington DC.   In its nearly five years of operation, the Newseum in Arlington, VA, welcomed more than 2.25 million visitors.   Currently, Mr. Urschel is directing the Newseum staff in the development of content for the new Newseum, which is scheduled to open, in 2006.

Urschel joined the Newseum from USA TODAY, where he held several key roles during his 14-year career at the nation’s largest circulation newspaper.   Those included managing editor/Life section, managing editor/special projects and senior writer.   He was a member of the team that developed “USA TODAY on TV,” a nationally syndicated daily news program, and worked as its supervising producer during its year-and-a-half-long run.   In addition, he wrote a twice-weekly column for the editorial pages.   He began his journalism career at Star-Tribune publications, a group of newspapers in suburban Chicago where he worked as a reporter and editor.   He later worked for the Detroit Free Press as a reporter, critic, associate magazine editor and assistant Sunday editor.

His journalism honors include awards from the National Association of Newspaper Columnists and the National Association of Sunday and Feature Editors.   He won an Emmy Award for a news documentary on campus crime that he wrote and co-produced.   He was graduated from the University of Illinois in 1974.   His wife, Donna, is a 1973 University of Illinois graduate and former reporter for the Detroit Free Press.
Karen Glick, Senior Regional Director of Development for the U of I Foundation, gave us a status on Foundation activities and some of the latest on campus developments.   As usual there were questions on how our sports teams were fairing, and she reminded us that the men's tennis team was number 1.

A short business meeting followed these ceremonies.   A motion was made, seconded, and passed to approve last years minutes.   A motion was made to extend the current officers and board members for a second term.   The motion was seconded and passed by unanimous voice vote.   Upcoming events were reviewed.
The meeting was adjourned at 3:10pm.
Walk the Billy Goat Trail

Rain, rain, rain!   This spring has been the rainiest in years - not flood type rains - just showers almost every day.   Several people cancelled at the last minute, but 4 people had a very enjoyable walk with a lot of wonderful scenery.   See the photo gallery for pictures.

Deep Throat revealed April 22, 2003
The Watergate Hotel -- William Gaines, Knight Chair Professor of Investigative and Enterprise Reporting at the University of Illinois, revealed the identity of Deep Throat.   For four years, over 60 students built a database of clues which led to identifying Deep Throat.   Two of the students, Kelly Soderlund and Thomas Rybarczyk (pictured here), from the 2002 spring class helped reveal this journalistic secret.   The identity of Deep Throat along with the process used in arriving at the identity was discussed at a press conference in the afternoon and again at an evening dinner.   The man they've identified as Deep Throat is Fred Fielding, a lawyer who was first assistant to John Dean, chief council to President Richard Nixon, at the time of the Watergate break-in in 1972.   Their case for this prediction can be examined on their web site deepthroatuncovered.com .   Professor Gaines said "We show there's documentation for everything that we have.   It's not interpretation, it's not guesswork."

The event was sponsored by the U of I Alumni Association from the Chicago campus and the U of I Alumni Club of Washington DC.   Arlene Norsym, Sheryl Coon, and Paula Havlik (Associate Director, Club & Constituent Programs - Champaign/Urbana) hosted the event.   An afternoon press conference with many reporters in attendance kicked off the event.   Agnes traveled out from Champaign to cover the event for the Daily Illini.   The evening started with 48 alums socializing at a reception.   The picture below shows Sheryl Coon welcoming Professor Gaines to the reception.
A complete explanation of the process used to determine the identity of Deep Throat followed an elegant dinner.   This was a fun evening and over the next few weeks will probably prove to be a very historic event.
Reading Scholarship Applications and Deciding on Recipients
On Saturday April 5th, Phyllis Gron, our director of scholarships, along with six other alums met at the Gron home to read 30 applications we received for the 8 scholarships we plan to award this year.   We will know who the winners are on May 1st - the U of I acceptance deadline.
Dialogue on the Social Value of Liberal Arts Education
Christel McDonald, President of DC's Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, moderated the dialogue.   Panelists were:
Philip L. Cantelon, professor, and co-founder of History Associates, inc.,
Traci L. Hughes, journalist, lawyer, writer, producer, editor,
Gail M. Leftwich, lawyer, political commentator, and columnist, and
Maurice East, professor, Elliott School of International Affairs.
After the panelists presented their arguments, there was a conversation with the audience.   This event concluded with a lovely reception and tour of the Brady Art Gallery.
Reception for Admitted Students
Tammie Bouseman, Acting Director of Undergraduate Admissions, and Jennifer Gore, the DC alumni club's director for recruitment, hosted a reception for newly admitted students.   Tammie said "We were thrilled to have record attendance at our admitted student reception at the Tyson's Corner Marriott on March 22, 2003.   We had 34 admitted students and 32 family members enjoy some refreshments, a "pop-quiz" about Illinois and our panel of current Illinois students.   Our panelists were David Schmitz, a freshman in Computer Engineering from Vienna VA, Allan Rudwick, a freshman in Electrical Engineering from Falls Church VA, Christopher Buchanan, a sophomore in Music Composition from Clifton VA, and Dennis Hou, a senior in Computer Engineering from Great Falls VA.   Nine alumni assisted with making our guests feel at home and answering their questions.   They were Jan and Merle Mulvaney, Basil Tripsas, Jennifer Gore, Ed Kim, Owen Lee, and Phyllis, Ted, and Claire Gron. A good time was had by all!"   A student receives a TEE shirt for answering a quiz question.
Sunday Dinner at Lebanese Taverna
The restaurant is on the Washingtonian's 100 Best list, in the moderate range.   The food was great and everyone had a good time.
Comedy Night at The Barns of Wolf Trap
The evening was filled with laughter and clean humor that was enjoyed by all.   David Werner, a lawyer and former member of the Capitol Steps, entertained the group with political satire, including familiar melodies with new words.   In addition to performing at corporate and government agency functions, David Werner has appeared on the CBS Evening New with Dan Rather and NBC’s Today.   Jeff Caldwell kept us laughing with his quick wit, good taste and clever material that enabled him to turn an undistinguished engineering job into a successful career as a comedian. Jeff has appeared on A&E’s Evening at the Improv and ESPN’s The Lighter Side of Sports. Jeff is currently working on a sitcom that will probably air during the fall of 2003. Brett Leake found the humor in everyday difficulties using a style that is both clean and funny. Brett performs nationally and has opened for Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno. In addition to five performances on the Tonight Show, Brett has appeared on Entertainment Tonight, The American Comedy Awards, An Evening at the Improv, and the Jerry Lewis Telethon.
Chicago Bulls v Washington Wizards Basketball Game
During Michael Jordan's final year of playing pro-basketball, the Washington Wizards offered our club half-priced seats to see the Wizards play the Bulls on March 1st.   In just a few days club members sent in orders for 65 tickets.   Even in this sold out environment almost all of our members were seated in the same section.   Following the game, one of our members said "The game was great -- and the process for getting the tickets was great -- we had 6 people go -- and Mike, the contact at MCI Center was wonderful --would do it again in a minute!"

Policy Forum on Ethnic Conflicts, A Hit
On February 13, club members and friends gathered at the Holiday Inn - Eisenhower Metro to socialize, enjoy hors d’oeuvres and beverages, and to discuss how the world community could reduce the chance of tragedies occurring such as the massacres in Bosnia, Kosovo and Rwanda.   Our speaker that evening was Ambassador John W. McDonald (BA/JD, LAS/LAW, ‘43/’46), a lawyer, career diplomat, development expert, and the Club’s 2002 “Alumni of the Year,” who also is Co-founder and Chairman of the Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy.

The evening began with Ambassador McDonald describing the increased incidence of these local and regional ethnic conflicts since the collapse of the Soviet Union.   He discussed how the developed world has handled these conflicts, which usually are rooted in centuries old grievances. His presentation included a discussion of multi-track diplomacy, which offers a number of avenues to ameliorate these situations.   He described one approach that has been especially successful - the use of indigenous, non-governmental groups to ameliorate the tensions and conditions that create and intensify these conflicts.   Other examples of this approach cited were Cyprus and Yugoslavia.

The evening ended with a question and answer period during which the group discussed the extent to which the US should become involved in these conflicts, and the difficulties in employing them.   We also explored whether the United Nations should pursue such prescriptions.

The audience response that evening was exhilarating.   There was an outpouring of positive comments about the program.   Everybody said they had an enjoyable evening and that the discussion was very stimulating.   Ambassador McDonald was praised for his work on these issues and for his insightful presentation.
Attended the live Crossfire TV Show
On the same night as the State of the Union Address, 65 members of the DC Alumni Club attended the live TV show "Crossfire".   All four of the hosts, James Carville, Paul Begala, Tucker Carlson, and Robert Novak participated in the show.   Robert Novak is a U of I Alum and our club's 1986 "Illini of the Year" award winner.   Bob made our group feel welcome, and his performance during the evening made Illini proud.   After the hosts debated topics such as potential war with Iraq, the economy, and budget deficits, they took questions from the audience.   Cathy Bischoff, a DC Alumni Club member, asked James Carville "How do you define 'sufficient means' when it concerns us going to war with Iraq?   Do we wait for Iraq to bomb Israel?   What should the body count stand at before we get involved?"   Their answers varied depending on their point of view.

Masonic Memorial and lunch at Joe Theismanns
In 1752, a young George Washington joined the already old Freemason organization.   In the Enlightenment period in the 17th century, gentlemen interested in Greek and Roman architecture sought membership in the fraternity for a deeper understanding of architecture and its proportions.
A ground-breaking ceremony for this memorial to George Washington was held Nov. 1, 1923 with President Coolidge and former President and fellow mason William Howard Taft in attendance.   During the bicentennial year of Washington's birth, President Herbert Hoover helped dedicate the memorial on May 12, 1932.

We stopped on each level to look at the exhibits and listen to a short recorded message.   When we got to the top, there was an awesome view of the area.   Most of us did not spend too much time looking north though, because the wind at that elevation made it a bit brisk!   We could see Theismann's restaurant just across the street, which made giving driving directions to lunch very easy.

December 7, 2002 Board Meeting
President Owen Lee introduced the board members, and explained what has happened since the last board meeting (leadership conference, web site, dues notices, alumni magazine).

SOME OF THE MORE IMPORTANT DECISIONS MADE WERE:
1) Invite scholarship donors to scholarship reception in May as a way of giving special thanks.
2) Publish a list of scholarship donors in February newsletter for public recognition.
3) Invite a few high school guidance councilors to scholarship reception.
4) Support the softball and flag football teams with $100 each to help cover costs.
5) Newsletter will be semi-annual with event supplements going to members without email as event schedules make necessary.
6) Operating funds will be used to cover the business costs of the annual meeting and scholarship reception.
7) The cost to attend the annual meeting will be $29.00 for those signing up before May 1 and $31.00 for later sign-ups.
8) The "Illini of Year" award winner was selected.
9) Events held where the business runs by donation and we charge $2.00, our guideline is to donate half to the business.
10) We are going to develop a new member directory. Owen will try to find new volunteers to help.

Prospective Student Reception at Washington Center in MD

On November 24th, Tammie Bouseman (on left) from the U of I Office of Admissions and records in Champaign and Jennifer Gore (on right), the U of I's DC Alumni Club's recruiting specialist, hosted the reception.   At least, nineteen students and their parents attended.   Tammie made some general comments about the University.   Owen Lee, the DC Alumni Club President, explained the activities of the alumni club, emphasizing the availability of several scholarships to accepted students.   Then, a panel of 4 current students answered questions from the prospective students.   Tony Wang, Dave Glogowski, and Ben Wang also from the alumni club attended to answer questions during the social hour.
THE 2002 FLAG FOOTBALL SEASON:
Our club participated in the Capital Alumni Network Flag Football League again this year.   The games are played on the Mall in Washington, DC on Saturdays and Sundays during October, November, and December.   The last game of the year was December 7th, in the snow and the cold, BUT after four years in Champaign that's nothing!!!   After the game however, most of the team needed to warm up a bit with some brew at the Crystal City Sports Bar and cheering while the Illini defeated a tough Arkansas Razorback basketball team.   Thanks to Patrick Godfrey we have pictures of this rare early December cold snap.   Pictured behind the flag is:   Row 1 from left: Kelly Nettleton, Theresa Mannion, Amy Krehbiel, Kris Finney; and Row 2 from left:   Doug Green, Geoff Manikin, Pat Godfrey, Joe Weedon, Joel Hercik.

Penn State Football Game

Coordinated by Merle Mulvaney and Geoff Manikin
Ninety-five alumni/family/friends attended the football game between the Fighting Illini and the Penn State Nitany Lions at Penn State University in State College, PA on November 2nd.   Seventy-seven chose two luxury buses laden with refreshments for the 4 1/2 hour trip; Eighteen provided their own transportation.   All the bus-riders started arriving in the parking lot of the Mid-Pike Plaza Shopping Center, near Rockville, MD at 9AM, loaded the buses at 9:45, and pulled out at 10 AM.
We stopped at the Gatehouse, in Breezewood, PA for a 30 minute "stretch break" and were parked at the stadium by 2:20 PM.   As we arrived, we watched the Illini Marching Band parade down the street and into the stadium.   We were seated just behind them during the game, which was an added treat.   Although the Illini lost the game, they showed some spark in the last nine minutes of the game that made the score respectable.   The buses departed Beaver Stadium at 7:20 PM, one-hour following the end of the game, stopped for dinner in Breezewood, PA and arrived back at Mid-Pike Plaza at approximately 12:30 AM, Sunday morning.   The weather was clear, breezy, and cold - (especially after sunset) - but it was bearable.   The fall foliage was beautiful, the refreshments plentiful, and the trip relaxing and uneventful.   Attendees spanned classes from 1953 to 2002, all from the UIUC campus.   One was a member from Charlottsville, VA, two from Dixon, IL, nine from the Baltimore area, and the remainder from the immediate DC area (DC, MD & VA).   Several members brought their children.   Everyone appeared to have a good time.   Coincidentally, neither of the bus drivers were from Illinois, but one of them, Mac MaCalister has both a son and daughter who are UIUC graduates.   The son is an architecht near Chicago, and the daughter a civil engineer living in Ashburn, VA.

2002 ILLINI FOOTBALL VIEWING PARTIES

Danielle is replacing Geoff as sports coordinator, and she has started in the style that we have become accustomed.   She enticed over 30 fans to come to her first party.

  The October 24-26 2002 Conference

This conference had 50 participants attending from 29 clubs, and was an international event with one attendee from Argentina.   It is hard to believe that the conference planners could schedule so many fun activities into two days and also provide us with a lot of information to help our clubs.   The kick-off activity was a very nice dinner at the Rib-Eye Steak House on Thursday evening.

Paula Havlik was a very gracious hostess throughout the entire weekend.
Friday morning started with some socializing while enjoying a continental breakfast.

The first speakers, Kathy and Teri, talked about how to use a diverse (mainly younger and older) set of volunteers to work together for a successful organization.   Then Susan explained what's new with the AA web site including putting the "Speakers Guide" and the "Leadership Guide" on the web.   Having these guides on the web will give us quicker access to updates and save printing costs.
We also found out that we could use an "Online Directory" to find out where fellow alums are living and even how to send them an Epostcard.

After a very nice lunch and entertainment by the "Other Guys" (a part of the Glee Club), awards were presented.   The best two small clubs were LaSalle County Illini Club, IL and Illinois Alumni Club of Greater Naples, FL.   The best large clubs were Champaign County Illini Club, IL and the Rockford Illini Club, IL.   The Rockford club can be seen here receiving their award with Loren Taylor, President and CEO of the Alumni Association, holding the left end of the banner and with Barbara Hundley, the Associate Chancellor and Vice President of the University for Alumni Relations, holding the right end of the banner.   Kelly Belford, head of the awards committee, from the New York Club is presenting the award.

Twelve clubs were also given awards for specific aspects of their programs.   These clubs are pictured below.   Our club won an award for "Best Club Scholarship Program".   With the assistance of the AA, we awarded eight $1,200 scholarships.

We toured the new Spurlock Museum, Relaxed at Legends, watched the Homecoming Parade, cheered at the Pep Rally, and on Saturday had a tailgate party before watching the football team play well and win over Indiana 45-14.

The conference ended with a reception for the outstanding students that were awarded club scholarships.   This year twenty-seven clubs awarded 61 scholarships for a total value of about $60,000.

If invited, I will 'BE BACK'!

Claude Moore Farm and Market Fair on October 19th 2002

In 1771, this young woman was living in the farmhouse behind us.   She married about a year earlier and moved out of her parents house which was about 2 miles from here.   She and her husband lease this small parcel of land for 500 pounds of tobacco a year.   They have a few chickens, turkeys, pigs, two cows, two horses and a small garden.   They also catch and preserve in salt a lot of fish when they run in the Potomac River.   While we were visiting, she was working on a potato pudding which she was going to serve her husband and six stepchildren for dinner.

As we shopped at the "Market Fair", we enjoyed musical entertainment, the children were thrilled with the puppet show, and quite often we stopped and tasted the chicken, sausage, pies, cookies, hot cider, beer, etc, etc, etc.

October 12, 2002 Mason Neck canoe trip
The canoe trip started and finished at Mason Neck State Park which overlooks Belmont Bay near the home of George Mason.   George Mason was one of the leaders in our fight for independence.
After an introduction to canoeing from our guide, we paddled on the gentle Belmont Bay waters to Kane's Creek.   We explored part of Kane's Creek, and then retraced our "steps".   Along the way we had six bald eagle sightings, and two great blue heron sightings.
Our guide also gave us a brief history of the area and its ecology.   The water for this trip was predictably calm and suitable for children and beginners.   The natural beauty of the area and complete absence of city noises were particularly noteworthy.   All had a great time.   After working up an appetite, the group had lunch at the nearby Polo Grill restaurant.
Trip coordinator was Cindy Smith and the photographer was Richard Conn
Fall Picnic at T.J. Atkinson's Home on October 5th 2002

What a beautiful day, and what a wonderful place to have a picnic.   We thank the Atkinsons for sharing their home.   We thank the Johnsons (Rosie and Ed) for doing all the work (coordinating) this event.   I thank the 5 past-presidents for coming.   Seated in front in the picture below (from left to right) is the current president Owen Lee followed by the 5 past-presidents in order of their terms Aran Hegarty, Jan Mulvaney, John Ellison, T.J. Atkinson, and Darrell Oyer.
After several days of various rain predictions as a result of Hurricane Lili, there was not a cloud in the sky and the temperature was perfect.   Fifty-four alumni/family/friends enjoyed eating lots of food; shooting some hoops; petting the GOAT, 2 dogs, and 4 horses; walking through the woods; and watching the wild geese fly over as dusk approached.   T.J. took the kids on a hayride while the bonfire was heating up.
We enjoyed socializing with our special guests Loren, Sue, and JC Taylor and Joel Weisman from Champaign/Urbana.   The evening ended with us roasting marshmallows and making smoores while a short business meeting was held.   We appreciated the updates that Loren and Joel gave us of happenings back on Campus.   Loren announced that Past-President Jan Mulvaney is now serving on the board of directors.   She will represent us well.
Merle, it's good to see that you had a chance to relax and enjoy the picnic.   You help and help and help on many of the events - THANKS!

Our host, T.J. Atkinson, chats with Loren Taylor.

11th Annual Wolf Trap Picnic & Performance of "Some Like it Hot"

Story and pictures by Merle Mulvaney

On August 27, 2002, thirty-eight alumni/family/friends attended a performance of the musical "Some Like It Hot", starring Tony Curtis.   All but four of them attended the pre-performance picnic.   For the 11th time, we escaped being "rained-out".   From our choice shaded location overlooking the meadow, the slight breeze made it a near perfect picnic setting, mingling, reminiscing, and making new acquaintances.   Terre Jones, President and CEO of the Wolf Trap Foundation, and former director of the Krannert Art Center on campus, stopped by the picnic and visited with the attendees, as well as posing with us for a group photo.
Attendees spanned classes from 1950 to 2001 and all graduated from the UIUC campus.   Two were from DC; and 36 were from VA.
Pictures are of (from left to right):   Mary Ester Obremskey and Jan Mulvaney.

THE 2002 SOFTBALL SEASON

Congratulations to the club's co-ed softball team for a great 11-4 season and a nice run in the Capital Alumni Network (CAN) tournament.   The regular season games were played at some historic and scenic sites (see the picture gallery) on the Mall in Washington, DC.   Over 800 alumni from 34 schools participated in the post season tournament held at Bolling Air Force Base.
Following the successful 11-4 season, the Illini rolled into the tournament looking for another victorious run.   Unfortunately, the team wasn't ready to go at the start and quickly found themselves down 8-0 in the 1st inning of a game that would be held to a 50-minute time limit.   After this wake-up call, the Illini rallied and won with a thrilling comeback in the bottom of the last inning.   Playing Massachusetts in the next game, the Illini again fell behind 6-0 in the 1st inning and were unable to recover.   Needing another win to advance to the second day, we again spotted our opponent (UConn) a 1st inning lead, but this time the Illini stormed right back and rolled to an easy victory.   Sunday's game against Villanova was one of the best contests of the weekend - a back and forth match that came down to the final batter.   The Illini rallied for 4 runs in the top of the 7th, but gave 3 back to the Wildcats in the bottom of the inning, a loss which ended a season full of fun and success.

Tour of Agricultural Research at Beltsville, MD

On August 2, 2002, our tour of the USDA-Agricultural Research Service facilities in Beltsville, MD started at the historic visitor's center.   This center was built by the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) in the early 1930s.   Our orientation briefing was held in the Eisenhower Room.   Yes, it was named after President Eisenhower who enjoyed coming there for breakfast.   This research center which covers about 7000 acres is the largest agricultural research center in the world.   After our orientation, we were driven to various research projects in a van powered by Bio-diesel fuel.   Adding 20% fuel made from soybeans to diesel fuel will almost completely eliminate that cancer causing black smoke that is characteristic of diesel engines.

How does ARS impact farmers and all of our lives?   When ARS found a way of making packing peanuts from corn, it reduced the demand for foreign oil, used surplus corn, and when the peanuts are discarded and mixed with water they melt down to almost nothing.   When ARS found ways of making paper, air filters, and diapers from chicken feathers, they doubled the value of raising chickens.   They have found that plants produce their own vaccines.   They are hoping to be able to infest a plant with HIV, let it develop a vaccine, and then harvest the vaccine and use it for human protection.   We had a most fascinating tour.
Joining us for lunch at Remington's after the tour was John Dobrinsky's niece from Missouri, along with John's wife and daughter.   John's daughter is probably the youngest member of our club, and is obviously getting a proper upbringing as a loyal ILLINI!!

On July 25th, the University of Illinois had a presence at the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Conference college fair.   The students at the conference were chosen by their respective high schools to be the "outstanding leaders" at the schools.   The eye catching Illinois booth had many visitors.   Students from IL, TN, KY, AR, WA, HI, Taiwan, .... stopped by to pick up brochures, and ask questions.   Questions were like "Does U of I have a good international business curriculum?", "Does U of I have an Airforce ROTC?", and "Can I study Drama at the U of I?"   It was quite rewarding visiting with these students because many of the students were very familiar with the
U of I.   Some approached trying to do Illini cheers, and went away correctly doing

Presentation of year 2002 Scholarships         May 22, 2002
Every club member should feel proud because the number of scholarships awarded this year was eight.   Never before have we awarded more than five.   Special thanks go to every club member for contributing through their membership fees and other donations.
Three outstanding high school students from Maryland and five from Virginia schools received these scholarships during a reception at the Fort Myers Officer's Club on May 22nd.   Two of the awardees were not able to attend.   Pictured on the left is David Schmitz from James Madison High School, Vienna, VA and will be in Engineering, majoring in Computer Science.   Next to David is Vinayak Sathyamoorthy from Thomas S. Wootton High School, Rockville, MD and will be in Engineering, studying Electrical Engineering.   Just to the left of the "Block I" is Allan Rudwick from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Falls Church, VA and will be in Engineering, majoring in Electrical Engineering.   Seated in the center is Joshua George from Herndon High School, Herndon, VA and will be in LAS majoring in Prejournalism.   Paula Faherty is from Lake Braddock High School, Springfield, VA and will be in Applied Life Sciences, studying Kinesiology.   On the far right is Jonathan Yeo from Thomas S. Wooten High School, Rockville, MD and will be in Engineering, studying Civil Engineering.

One of the scholarships was awarded in memory of Dr. Paul Q. Peterson who was the founding Dean of the college of Public Health and a great supporter of the club's scholarship program.   The recipient of that scholarship was Joshua George who is seated in the center.   Seated on the left is Mrs. Mildred Peterson (Paul's widow).   Seated on the right is Penny Peterson (Paul's neice).   Standing are the parents of Joshua.
